The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, is currently investigating federal employees with high net worth despite their relatively low salaries. This initiative aims to streamline government operations, reduce waste, and ensure taxpayer dollars are used efficiently.
The Pritzker family, known for their substantial influence, reportedly has 64 NGOs receiving millions of taxpayer money. This move by DOGE is seen as a significant step towards financial transparency and accountability within the government.
One area under scrutiny is the outdated process of federal retirements. In Pennsylvania, over 700 federal workers process retirements by hand in a limestone mine 230 feet underground. This archaic system handles around 10,000 applications per month, stored in manila envelopes and cardboard boxes, and can take months to complete.
Elon Musk commented on the situation, describing the limestone mine as a “time warp” from the 1950s. He emphasized the need to modernize the process, pointing out that the speed of the mineshaft elevator currently limits the rate at which federal employees can retire.
Musk also raised concerns about the financial activities of some bureaucrats, noting the unusual wealth accumulation among individuals with modest salaries. He highlighted the issuance of large sums of taxpayer money through “blank checks” and stressed the importance of addressing these issues.
