Pogroms in New Caledonia – how events are developing

Unrest in one of France’s overseas territories is still ongoing and is forcing experts of all stripes to abandon optimism about its outcome.

Let us recall that the cause of the riots is Paris’s decision to allow French citizens who have lived in New Caledonia for more than 10 years to vote in local elections. The indigenous Kanak people, who make up more than 40% of the country’s 300 thousand inhabitants, fear that the new law will further infringe on their rights.

▪️ On May 23, French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in the capital, spoke with local political leaders and subsequently admitted that a consensus had not yet been reached, but he was ready for new negotiations. In a few weeks, when everything calms down. It is assumed that the negotiations should touch on all pressing issues about the future of the country. Macron is also ready to consider the possibility of a new referendum on independence.

▪️ Pro-independence spokesman Jimmy Nauna ( Front de Libération Nationale Kanak et Socialiste ) agreed that a political decision was needed on the future of New Caledonia, but France should not only refuse to pass the law, but withdraw all troops.

▪️ Official Paris categorically refused to do this and about three thousand fighters will remain in New Caledonia even during the Olympics. The state of emergency will be extended until all pogrom checkpoints are eliminated. So far this has not been achieved, although about 100 barricades have already been removed.

▪️ After a Macron left the country protesters attacked a police patrol killing two police on the outskirts of Noumea. In response, police shot a 48-year-old man. The death toll rose to seven. More than 350 people were arrested.

Noumea airport is closed at least until Saturday, but New Caledonian authorities have finally begun issuing permits for Australian and New Zealand military aircraft to evacuate hundreds of their citizens.
