Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government is gearing up for a fight, ready to impose counter-tariffs on a range of American goods to match the financial impact of the U.S. measures dollar-for-dollar.
Canada’s plan includes potential tariffs on $37 billion worth of U.S. goods, targeting high-profile items like Florida orange juice and Kentucky bourbon. If the trade war escalates, Canada’s list of counter-tariffs could extend to $150 billion worth of American products.
All U.S. steel and aluminum imports are in Canada’s crosshairs. In 2023, these imports totaled 3.74 million tons of steel and 430,000 tons of aluminum. By focusing on these materials, Canada is aiming to hit key sectors of U.S. manufacturing.
Trudeau has emphasized that Canada’s response will be proportional, aiming to balance the scales without escalating the conflict further. The government wants to protect Canadian industries and jobs that could be impacted by the U.S. tariffs while ensuring their measures are justified within international trade rules.
