UK Parliament just voted to legalise abortion up to the moment of birth. No debate. No media coverage. No public consent.

The United Kingdom just rewrote the rules on life and death. On June 17, 2025, Parliament voted 379 to 137 to decriminalize abortion in England and Wales. Not tweak it. Not reform it. Strip it bare. The amendment, buried inside a broader criminal justice bill, removes criminal penalties for women who end their pregnancies at any stage. That includes the final hour before birth. For 60 years, the law capped abortions at 24 weeks, requiring approval from two doctors. That framework is now a relic. Under the new amendment, women will no longer face investigation, arrest, or prosecution for terminating a pregnancy at any point. The 1967 Abortion Act still technically governs medical procedures, but enforcement is now toothless. The state has effectively stepped away from the unborn.

Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi, who introduced the amendment, argued that the law had been used to investigate 100 women in the past five years. Some were victims of abuse. Others had premature births. Her pitch: compassion over prosecution. But the numbers tell a colder story. In 2022 alone, England and Wales recorded over 250,000 abortions. Nearly 99% occurred before 20 weeks. That remaining 1% now has no legal ceiling. There is no longer a line.

Medical professionals who assist in abortions beyond 24 weeks could still face prosecution. But that’s a legal fig leaf. Enforcement is unlikely. The amendment passed with cross-party support. No party whip. No televised debate. Just 46 minutes of discussion before the vote. That’s how long it took to erase the final legal protection for the unborn.

The government claims the 24-week limit still stands. But without criminal penalties, it’s a guideline, not a guardrail. Conservative MP Rebecca Paul warned that this could allow “fully developed babies” to be aborted without consequence. She wasn’t exaggerating. The amendment’s language is clear. Women acting “in relation to her own pregnancy at any gestation” are exempt from prosecution. That includes full term.

The British Pregnancy Advisory Service called it a “turning point.” They’re right. The law now treats a viable baby in the womb as a legal nonentity. The public didn’t ask for this. There was no referendum. No national conversation. Just a quiet procedural vote while the Prime Minister was overseas. The Justice Secretary called the amendment “extreme.” She still voted for it. This is what political capture looks like.
