The New York Times has come under scrutiny for claiming that Romania canceled its presidential election due to “clear evidence of Russian manipulation.” However, the article itself reveals that Romanian intelligence documents provided no concrete evidence of a Russian role in the election cancellation. The only “evidence” cited was the fact that Russia has interfered in elections before.
The Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the country’s presidential election on December 6, 2024, just two days before the final round of voting. This decision was based on newly declassified intelligence documents that pointed to voting manipulation through social media platforms, illegal campaign financing on TikTok, cyber-attacks orchestrated by external forces, and suspected Russian interference. However, the documents did not provide direct evidence of Russian involvement.
US Vice President JD Vance criticized Romania’s decision to annul its presidential elections, saying the top court’s ruling was based on “flimsy suspicions of an intelligence agency and enormous pressure from its continental neighbors.” Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, he called the move unjustified and warned of the broader consequences for democracy in Europe.
“As I understand it, the argument was that Russian disinformation had infected the Romanian elections. But I’d ask my European friends to have some perspective. You can believe it’s wrong for Russia to buy social media advertisements to influence your elections; we certainly do; you can condemn it on the world stage even. But if your democracy can be destroyed with a few hundred thousand dollars of digital advertising from a foreign country, then it wasn’t very strong to begin with,” JD Vance told the Munich conference on February 14.
This marked the first official response from the Trump administration on the issue, Biziday.ro noted.
In his speech, JD Vance pointed to former European Commissioner Thierry Breton – though not mentioning him by name – for allegedly supporting Romania’s decision. “He warned that if things don’t go to plan, the very same thing could happen in Germany too … But when we see European courts canceling elections and senior officials threatening to cancel others, we ought to ask whether we’re holding ourselves to an appropriately high standard,” Vance said.
The court’s abrupt decision threw Romania’s political landscape into chaos and sparked widespread concern about the media’s responsibility in reporting accurate information. The situation has led to accusations that the NYT is pushing misleading news and has raised questions about the importance of responsible journalism.
