The head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed that her phone and email were hacked. The Mexican leader revealed that it was the multinational company Apple who alerted the Agency for Digital Transformation and Telecommunications about the security breach, which allowed a quick intervention to mitigate the effects of the cyber attack.
‘We got a call from Apple to let us know what had happened. The Digital Transformation and Telecommunications Agency took action and very quickly reviewed it,’ Sheinbaum explained during a press conference. While she did not specify the type of information that may have been compromised, she said authorities are already investigating the source of the attack and strengthening security measures on their devices.
This incident adds to a growing wave of cyber attacks against public figures and governments in different parts of the world, which has highlighted the vulnerability of digital communications. In Mexico, the hacking of government accounts and sensitive databases has been a constant concern, with recent cases compromising high-level information.
Sheinbaum, who is in the midst of campaigning for the 2024 presidential elections, did not rule out that this attack could be politically motivated. ‘There are always those who try to destabilise, but we continue to work with transparency and responsibility,’ she added.
The Mexican government has announced that it will strengthen its cybersecurity protocols to prevent future attacks. Digital security experts have recommended the implementation of more advanced protection tools and ongoing training of government personnel to prevent information leaks.
