Senator Rand Paul has invited Elon Musk to conduct an audit of the gold reserves at Fort Knox. The reserves, estimated to be worth $425 billion, have not undergone a thorough review in decades. This invitation follows Musk’s recent comments on social media questioning why the gold reserves are not audited annually.
The last public viewing of Fort Knox’s vaults occurred in 1974, with another visit by then-Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin in 2017. According to the U.S. Mint, Fort Knox holds 147.3 million ounces of gold, representing approximately half of the Treasury’s reserve gold. However, the government’s valuation of $42.22 per ounce is significantly lower than the current market rate of nearly $2,900 per ounce.
Former Representative Ron Paul, Senator Paul’s father, has been a long-time advocate for greater transparency regarding the nation’s gold reserves. He has previously introduced legislation calling for a manual audit of the gold at Fort Knox. Many believe that Ron Paul would be an excellent choice to lead this gold audit, given his deep knowledge and dedication to the issue.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Musk, has been tasked with conducting audits of various federal agencies to identify wasteful spending. This latest initiative to audit Fort Knox’s gold reserves is part of that broader effort.
🚨Update: The US Government claims it has almost 5000 tons of Gold, but Fort Knox US Gold Reserve has not been audited since 1974, almost 50 years ago. No one has seen any of it. It’s time for Elon and DOGE to conduct a full audit of every single ounce of Gold!! It’s our money!! pic.twitter.com/U8wCFpd0QU
