Rubio Schools CBS’s Margaret Brennan on the ‘Weaponization’ of Free Speech

You can’t make this up. During a recent exchange with CBS News’ Margaret Brennan, Senator Marco Rubio absolutely obliterated the anchor’s ludicrous claim that Nazis “weaponized” free speech to conduct genocide. Yes, you read that right. Brennan, somehow, managed to twist history into a bizarre theory where free speech was the culprit behind the Holocaust.

When Brennan tried to push the narrative that free speech played a role in Nazi genocides, Rubio quickly stepped in and set the record straight, “I have to disagree with you. Free speech was not used to conduct a genocide. The genocide was conducted by an authoritarian Nazi regime.” The Senator didn’t stop there, pointing out that there was absolutely no free speech under Hitler’s reign—just a brutal, totalitarian regime with a single governing party and no opposition.

But Brennan, clearly flustered, went on to criticize the U.S. vice president for meeting with Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), a party she labeled “far right,” despite the fact that the Vice President also met with other German political leaders. Of course, in Europe, anyone who doesn’t believe in unchecked immigration or open borders is immediately branded as “far right.” Brennan’s attempt to paint her political opponents as fascists and Nazis falls flat when you remember that Europe, under the banner of “free speech,” has been censoring political discourse at an alarming rate.

Then the real kicker: Brennan tried to justify censorship, claiming it was specifically aimed at the right. Well, isn’t that convenient? The left can spew whatever nonsense they want, but the moment the right speaks, it’s a threat to civilization itself. Rubio, once again, made it crystal clear that censorship, especially when it comes to speech you don’t like, is the true hallmark of authoritarianism.

You want to know what the problem is? The left’s attempts to “counter” speech they don’t agree with by censoring it isn’t just dangerous, it’s fundamentally un-American. As Rubio said, “If you don’t believe in their right to say it, you are a totalitarian.” It’s a simple yet powerful statement that reflects the values the U.S. has stood for since its founding—freedom of speech, no matter how distasteful or controversial the message might be.

Brennan was left speechless (no surprise there), and Rubio made one thing clear: as the left works overtime to censor and silence opposing voices, it’s refreshing to see the highest levels of government pushing back on this tyranny, particularly in Europe, where free speech is being increasingly suffocated.

Let’s take a step back and remember the lesson from Mel Brooks’ The Producers, when the clueless director, Roger De Bris, comments on “Springtime for Hitler,” saying, “Remarkable, remarkable! A stunning piece of work… I never knew that the Third Reich meant Germany.” When you’re so lost in your own ideology that you lose all historical perspective, you might as well be writing a musical about the rise of Hitler.

Brennan’s attempt to equate free speech with the horrors of Nazi genocide isn’t just a historical blunder; it’s a dangerous revisionist narrative. It’s time to ask: what’s more dangerous, the speech itself or the tyranny that seeks to silence it?
