The federal government is building a data engine with no brakes. Palantir Technologies, the surveillance firm co-founded by Peter Thiel, has secured a contract to create a centralized platform linking IRS records, Social Security files, immigration data, and more. The system is being constructed under the Trump administration’s executive order signed March 20, titled “Stopping Waste, Fraud, and Abuse by Eliminating Information Silos.” The language sounds procedural. The outcome is anything but.
The order gives federal officials sweeping access to unclassified records across agencies. It overrides prior restrictions. It mandates that departments remove internal data-sharing barriers within 30 days. It grants access to state-level databases, even if stored by third parties. The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, is coordinating the rollout. Elon Musk previously led the agency. His stated goal was to “make computers talk to each other.” The real mission is consolidation.
Palantir’s Foundry software is the core of the system. It’s not a spreadsheet tool. It’s a full-scale data operating system. Foundry pulls from fragmented sources and builds a unified profile. It tracks behavior. It flags anomalies. It feeds decisions. The Department of Defense already uses it for battlefield logistics. Now it’s being deployed domestically.
The IRS is already integrating Palantir’s tools. According to congressional letters and whistleblower reports, Palantir employees are embedded inside the agency. They’re helping build a searchable database of taxpayer records. The data will be accessible across departments. That includes agencies with no tax enforcement role. The system is designed to be interoperable. The access is not limited.
The contract value exceeds $113 million. A separate $795 million deal was signed with the Pentagon. Palantir’s stock jumped 5.38% after the announcement. The company’s market cap has more than doubled since the 2024 election. The infrastructure is being built in silence. The public was not consulted. The oversight is minimal.
