OpenAI browser threat looms. ChatGPT chatbox bypasses search clicks. Chrome monopoly faces DOJ pressure.

OpenAI is preparing to launch its own web browser built on Chromium. This browser will embed a native chatbox powered by ChatGPT, designed to keep users inside the AI interface. That means fewer redirects, fewer ad impressions, and a direct challenge to Google’s search-driven revenue model. Chrome currently routes billions of users to Google Search. That traffic fuels a $200 billion advertising engine. OpenAI’s browser is built to bypass it.

The browser will include OpenAI’s Operator agent. That tool can book flights, fill out forms, summarize documents, and complete tasks without sending users to external sites. With over 400 million weekly ChatGPT users, even a small migration to OpenAI’s browser would cut into Google’s data pipeline. Chrome holds 67% of the global browser market. Safari sits at 16%. If OpenAI grabs 5%, it would be the biggest browser shift since Firefox peaked in 2009.

The ChatGPT chatbox itself is already hurting search traffic. Users are skipping search engines entirely and going straight to the chatbox for answers. ChatGPT now handles over 37.5 million search-like queries per day. That’s still a fraction of Google’s 14 billion daily searches, but the growth curve is steep. ChatGPT’s site sees over 3.7 billion visits a month, with session times averaging 8 to 13 minutes. That’s not casual use. That’s habit formation.

The impact is sharpest in top-of-funnel queries. Definitions, how-tos, comparisons, summaries. These used to drive traffic to blogs, guides, and explainer pages. Now they’re answered directly inside the chatbox. No links. No clicks. No ad impressions. A 2023 study showed that 58% of Google searches already ended in zero-click results. ChatGPT pushes that even further. Users don’t just skip the click. They skip the search.

The Department of Justice is already circling. A federal judge ruled last year that Google holds an unlawful monopoly in online search. DOJ is now demanding divestiture of Chrome. OpenAI testified it would be interested in buying Chrome if forced to sell. That’s not speculation. OpenAI hired two former Google VPs who helped build Chrome’s original architecture.

Perplexity launched its own browser last week. Brave and The Browser Company are also in the mix. But OpenAI has the user base, the infrastructure, and the momentum. The browser is expected to launch before the end of July. Google’s response has been muted. The market is watching. The Kodak moment is loading.
