Mexico’s political landscape has once again been stained with blood. Yesenia Lara Gutiérrez, a mayoral candidate for the Morena party, was shot and killed while greeting supporters in Texistepec, Veracruz. The attack, carried out by suspected cartel gunmen, was broadcast live on Facebook, capturing the moment gunfire erupted and chaos unfolded.
The rally had been a typical campaign event, filled with supporters waving flags and chanting slogans. Then, in an instant, everything changed. The live stream recorded the sound of 20 gunshots, sending people scrambling for cover. Lara Gutiérrez was struck down, along with her daughter and two others. Three more were wounded in the attack.
This is the second political assassination in Veracruz in recent weeks. Just days earlier, councillor Cecilia Ruvalcaba was murdered in Jalisco, adding to the growing list of politicians targeted by organized crime. The violence is relentless, with over 660 politically-linked attacks recorded last year alone.
Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle García condemned the killing, calling it a cowardly act and vowing justice. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged the attack but stated that no motive has been confirmed. Authorities are investigating, but history suggests that justice in these cases is rare.
The timing of this assassination is critical. Mexico’s municipal elections are approaching, and the wave of violence against candidates is raising serious concerns about security. Politicians are being hunted down in broad daylight, with cartels exerting their influence over local governments.
The investigation is ongoing, but the reality is clear. Mexico’s political system is under siege, and candidates are paying the price with their lives.
