Zohran Mamdani wants to wipe every misdemeanor off New York’s map. Not just petty theft. Not just drug possession. DUI, unarmed assault, prostitution, fare evasion. All gone.
“Police have a critical role to play but right now we’re relying on them to deal with the failures of our social safety net, which is preventing them from doing their actual jobs.”

That is not a tweak. That is a full-scale retreat from enforcement.

The Democratic Socialists of America back him. They call policing and detention “instruments of class war” designed to “guarantee the domination of the working class.” Their platform demands abolition of prisons, cash bail, and parole violations. Mamdani echoes it word-for-word:
“For all of the working class to achieve collective liberation we must constrain, diminish, and abolish the carceral forces of the state from prisons and police themselves to their manifestations in all forms throughout society.”

Not reform. Demolition.
He has tried to redefine violence itself.
“What violent crime is is defined by the state. Violence is an artificial construction.”

That is not nuance. That is erasure. If violence is just a label, what is left to prosecute?
After the Park Avenue massacre in July, Mamdani pivoted slightly. He said he would keep the NYPD “roughly at its current size” but redirect officers to “serious” crimes. Rafael Mangual of the Manhattan Institute sees the contradiction:
“I don’t buy for a second that he is moderated on any of these policing questions because he has yet to really articulate in any deep way why he’s moderated or how he’s moderated.”

He says he has changed. The platform has not.
Residents are already feeling the impact.
“They’re driving the city into a hole that’s never going to recover.”
American Digest
Greenwich Village streets have turned into open-air drug dens. The 6th Precinct reports rising disorder. Mamdani’s plan would make it worse.
No one is asking what happens when every low-level consequence disappears. No diversion programs. No accountability. Just a vacuum. In that vacuum, chaos spreads. The emotional cue buried in Mamdani’s rhetoric “collective liberation” sounds noble until you realize it means no jail for drunk drivers.
Misdemeanors in New York include theft under 1,000 dollars, drug possession, and driving while intoxicated. These are not harmless. They are the daily crimes that grind neighborhoods down. Mamdani’s plan would render them non-events.

Zohran Mamdani is taking big donations from billionaires meanwhile the progressive left is not batting an eye
