In a recent and highly contentious decision, the Hawaii State Legislature voted in favor of House Bill 1118. This bill aims to eliminate religious exemptions for school vaccine requirements. Despite hearing two hours of passionate testimonies against the bill, lawmakers ultimately voted “yes.”
This legislation was introduced as part of Governor Josh Green’s legislative package. It seeks to increase vaccination coverage across the state. Over the past years, Hawaii has seen its non-medical exemption rates rise from 2.5% in the 2015-2016 school year to 5.3% in the 2023-2024 school year. Notably, 55 out of 382 schools reported exemption rates exceeding 10%.
The decision to pass the bill has ignited significant backlash from health freedom advocates, who argue that it infringes on personal liberties. This legislation marks a significant shift in Hawaii’s approach to vaccine mandates, especially as other states have recently expanded vaccine exemptions.
