A former Uvalde, Texas, Assistant District Attorney died by suicide.
Police found Erin Benavides, 54, dead in her home on October 14 after receiving a request for a wellness check.
Benavides served as an assistant DA in the anti-gang unit and border protection from January 2023 through August 31, 2026.
Erin Benavides was previously married to San Antonio Spurs player Brent Barry and was previously accused of having an “emotional affair” with NBA star Tony Parker.
Uvalde Leader News reported:
Police officers found former 38th Judicial District prosecutor Erin Benavides, 54, deceased in a Port Aransas home Oct. 14 after receiving a call for a wellness check. Authorities believe the death to be a suicide.
Benavides served as an assistant district attorney from Jan. 17, 2023, through Aug. 31, 2026. She worked in a state grant-funded position on the Anti-Gang and Border Prosecution Unit. She has also worked as a child abuse advocate and caseworker, including as CEO of the Youth Center of South Texas and a member of the Bexar County Child Welfare Board.
Before her career as a prosecutor in South Texas, she was married to former San Antonio Spurs athlete Brent Barry. The couple divorced in 2011.
Port Aransas Police Department Lieutenant Joseph Rivas said Benavides appeared to be living alone and unemployed at the time of her death, though journals officers found indicate she was looking for work in Port Aransas. She had recently moved, he said, and the house appeared mostly empty.
A friend of Benavides’ current husband, attorney Pablo “Paul” Benavides, called police the evening of Oct. 14 and relayed an alarming text Erin Benavides sent to him 15 minutes prior. By the time police arrived and made a forced entry, Benavides was dead. Rivas said she was found with a single gunshot wound.
The investigation was still pending as of Oct. 28. Rivas said there “doesn’t seem to be anything indicating anything else” other than suicide regarding her cause of death.
Tragic news out of South Texas: Erin Marie Benavides, former wife of a Spurs player and current assistant district attorney for Uvalde and Real counties, has died at 54 in Port Aransas from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police confirmed.
Many in the basketball world will recognize her as Erin Barry, the woman thrust into national tabloids during the 2010 Spurs fallout. But away from the spotlight, she quietly remade her life, graduating from St. Mary’s Law in San Antonio and spending years on the front lines prosecuting border crimes and human smuggling.
