Democrat-run Broward County, long a magnet for election chaos, public-safety failure, and one-party machine politics, just got a statewide knock on the door.
At the request of Florida’s Office of Statewide Prosecution, the Broward Sheriff’s Office began serving subpoenas on Wednesday to the entire Broward County Commission, County Administrator Monica Cepero, the deputy county administrator, and several other senior ranking members of County Administration.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office issued this statement:
“At the request of Florida’s Office of Statewide Prosecution, the Broward Sheriff’s Office began serving subpoenas on Sept. 9, 2026, on the entire Broward County Commission, county administrator, deputy county administrator and several other senior ranking members of the County Administration.”

That is the entire sitting commission, all Democrats, plus the top unelected bureaucrats who run one of the largest county governments in America.
Sheriff Gregory Tony’s deputies delivered the papers. The same Sheriff’s Office that the commission has been trying to shove out of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades, Local10 reported.
The subpoenas come as Broward County officials consider whether to remove the Broward Sheriff’s Office from law-enforcement operations at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades.
According to CBS Miami, prosecutors are examining the county’s review of whether BSO should remain responsible for security at the airport and seaport. WIOD reported that the investigation also involves a feasibility study conducted by consulting firm Jensen Hughes.
The county has explored creating separate police departments for the airport and Port Everglades, an expensive proposal that could dramatically alter public safety operations in one of Florida’s busiest transportation hubs.
BSO has argued that the proposed changes could cost taxpayers more and weaken established law-enforcement services.
The sheriff’s office has published information stating that Broward County is considering independent police departments for the airport and Port Everglades while also examining whether Fire Rescue should be brought under direct county control.
BSO’s public explanation of the dispute says previous transition studies found that creating new departments could be more expensive than continuing services through the sheriff’s office.
The investigation also follows a broader state review of Broward law-enforcement spending.
In June, Florida Bulldog reported that Florida’s Department of Government Efficiency ordered Sheriff Gregory Tony to provide extensive financial records dating back to 2022, including contracts, invoices, payments, personnel costs, and purchasing documents.

In 2018, Broward County Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes presided over a chaotic midterm recount in which the county’s reported vote total increased by roughly 80,000 over the four days after Election Day, amid serious ballot-handling and reporting problems. Earlier that year, thousands of mail ballots were discovered uncounted after the August primary.
A judge also ruled that Snipes’s office illegally destroyed ballots from the 2016 Democrat primary between Tim Canova and Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Snipes submitted her resignation amid the controversy, and Gov. Ron DeSantis formally accepted it in January 2019.
That same year, then-Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel’s agency faced national outrage after the Parkland massacre. School resource deputy Scot Peterson remained outside Building 12 while Nikolas Cruz murdered 17 people, and reports later indicated that additional BSO deputies also failed to enter the building.
Israel nevertheless defended his record, saying, “I’ve given amazing leadership to this agency.” Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended him in 2019, and the Florida Senate later upheld the suspension.
Gregory Tony was appointed to replace Israel. In June 2025, Attorney General Uthmeier sent Tony a blistering letter after the sheriff publicly declared immigration enforcement “is NOT ONE OF” his priorities and that he would “NOT participate in it.”
Uthmeier warned that refusal to meet Florida’s statutory duty to support federal immigration enforcement could lead to contempt or removal by the governor.
Now the same Attorney General’s statewide prosecutors have asked Tony’s own agency to serve subpoenas on the Democrat commission that is trying to take the airport and port away from BSO. The optics write themselves.
