New York City Mayor Eric Adams has updated the city’s guidelines on interactions with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. This change comes after feedback from labor leaders and local Democrats who found the previous instructions too lenient towards federal immigration authorities.
Adams met with his staff on Monday morning, urging them to avoid criticizing President Donald Trump to ensure continued federal funding. The new guidance includes a flowchart detailing steps for city workers to follow if approached by ICE agents, such as asking for identification and a judicial warrant.
These updates aim to balance the city’s status as a sanctuary city with constitutional requirements. While employees can verbally deny access to ICE agents without a judicial warrant, they are instructed not to interfere with law enforcement actions if officers proceed.
