The layoffs will primarily target probationary employees—those who have been with the federal government for less than a year. Agencies such as the Department of Education, the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau, and the Environmental Protection Agency are among those affected. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has directed agencies to compile lists of probationary employees, leading to widespread terminations.
Thousands of federal workers have already been let go, with more expected to follow. The Trump administration’s efforts to shrink the federal workforce have faced legal challenges, but the administration remains determined to cut costs.
