Payman announced the creation of a new party called Australia’s Voice on Wednesday, and claimed “disenfranchised” former supporters of Labor and the Coalition had already pledged their backing to her new party.

She said the party would run candidates in seats around the country – potentially including directly against her former colleagues in the government.

“We can no longer sit by while our voices are drowned out by the same old politics. It’s time to stand up, to rise together and to take control of our future,” Payman told a press conference in Parliament House.

“Australians are fed up with the major parties having a duopoly a stranglehold over our democracy. If we need to drag the two major parties kicking and screaming to do what needs to be done, we will do it.”
