The United States has instructed the United Kingdom to assume leadership of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG). This marks the first time the UK will lead the group, with UK Defence Secretary John Healey set to convene the next meeting in Brussels.
The UDCG, which first met in April 2022, has been chaired by the U.S. in all of its previous 25 meetings. The group comprises representatives from over 50 countries, collaborating to coordinate military aid to Ukraine. The U.S. decision for the UK to take over leadership comes as the U.S. aims to reduce its role in Europe and encourage NATO members to increase their defense spending.
During the upcoming meeting, priorities for Ukraine will be discussed as the international community continues to support the country in its conflict with Russia. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will attend the meeting, but the U.S. will not host it for the first time.
