CAIRNS News has been sent Russian video of hundreds of unarmed Syrian Army troops abandoning their posts as the so-called rebels, aided by US and Israeli bombing, took over government in Damascus.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) fighters from the Islamic State ambushed and killed 54 of these soldiers who had fled to the desert after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government.
“The soldiers were captured and brutally killed by Al-Qaeda jihadists in the Homs province, located in central Syria,” AFP reported. The Syrian troops were apparently attempting to wait out the crisis in the desert.
The attack happened after the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) announced the capture of Damascus early last Sunday morning. The Assad family, which had ruled Syria for over 50 years, was overthrown and fled to Russia.
Media reported that HTS is recognized by the US and the UN as a terrorist organization, “However, it might be removed from the sanctions list if it changes its conduct”.
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, said the decision to potentially lift sanctions on HTS depended on the actions of this group. However, it is unclear whether the 10 million dollar reward for capturing the HTS leader, Abu Muhammad al-Jawlani, still stands.
If video from mainstream media is to be believed, many Syrians are happy about the demise of Assad and large numbers of political prisoners have apparently been freed from jails. But it is hard to imagine a regime of Jihadists forgiving those in the Christian community and army, who Assad protected.
The rebel groups, led by Abu Mohammed al Jolani’s have installed a transition government led by a new Prime Minister named as Mohammed al Bashir, who is an educated man with a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Aleppo.
However, ominously Bashir’s promotional photo shows him seated at a desk with two flags behind him – one the Syrian national flag with its three stars and the other plain white flag emblazoned with what looks like a bunch of Jihadist slogans that also looks suspiciously like the ISIS flag.
Meanwhile Benjamin Netyanyahu, like the gangster pretending to seek a deal with a potential competitor, has “reached out” to Syria seeking “good relations” while at the same time sending jets to bomb the country’s weapons stockpiles, naval fleet, air bases, chemical weapons, long-range missiles, helicopters, anti-aircraft batteries and other military sites.
